SLINGSHOT

Interactive contemporary jewelry featured in
Athens Jewelry Week 2020

A porcelain bracelet that can only be worn once it has been broken. This forces the wearer to throw away any preconceptions of preciousness associated with the original piece.

The bracelet is one of hundreds that have been batch produced, yet will always be unique to the wearer and in time, the more it is worn, the more it is bashed around and not taken care of, the more it will gain value as the porcelain chips away and reveals more of the inner core.

The value of a piece is often judged by the rarity of metals, high cost of materials and the reputation of the designer… unfortunately I have none of these, so I decided to focus on the user.

As someone with little experience in the field of ‘contemporary jewelry’ I started this project with a simple question: “Why don’t people wear jewelry?”

Those that I could relate to the most were ‘Jewelry is expensive’ and ‘People worry about breaking it’. Through focusing on materials and techniques that lend themselves to replication and batch production, I cut the costs in an aim to make this luxury more accessible for a younger generation.

The high-grit price tag can be used to blunt any sharp porcelain that remains after smashing.
